OFFICE/UNIT/PROJECT DESCRIPTION
United Nations field personnel are exposed to various health and safety risks, which can lead to illness. The availability of quality primary healthcare services can mitigate the negative consequences of illness and prevent complications to some extent. Such a system offers a greater chance of saving many lives and ensuring a rapid and effective return to work.
The Laboratory Technician is part of the United Nations clinic’s care team, which is itself attached to the United Nations common services under the responsibility of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), which is led by the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System.
The Laboratory Technician, under the direct supervision of the United Nations Clinic Physician, runs the laboratory section (unit) full-time and provides services to staff members and their dependents (persons recognized by the Organization).
The primary responsibility of the Laboratory Technician is to perform medical biology analyses and interpret the results obtained in the respective fields of hematology, biochemistry, immunoserology, and microbiology (bacteriology, parasitology, and virology). In addition, the Laboratory Technician provides biological monitoring for patients (staff members and dependents) with chronic conditions.
The Laboratory Technician is an integral part of the emergency response team and will work in the implementation of the emergency response plan.
SCOPE OF WORK
To ensure quality healthcare for patients, the Laboratory Technician’s main tasks will be:
Clinical Tasks:
The management of the United Nations clinic laboratory to ensure efficient operation of daily functions;
Regular maintenance of all laboratory equipment according to the manufacturers’ technical specifications;
The rapid and effective resolution of all problems related to laboratory performance;
Efficient communication and coordination with the maintenance technician and occasional facilitation of on-site service are required;
The collection of blood samples using international sterilization and biosafety standards;
Collect and label urine and sputum drops for various tests in accordance with international biosafety standards;
Perform all laboratory tests as requested by the physician in a prompt and professional manner;
Sterilize instruments and containers according to biosafety standards;
Contribute to the organization and implementation of health promotion and control programs;
Perform diagnosis and laboratory tests using available equipment and instruments;
Report test results to the doctor in a timely manner;
Ensure that reports are submitted promptly, confidentially, and within deadlines.
Administrative Tasks:
Ensure proper stock management; maintain an inventory of laboratory supplies and ensure that supplies are always replenished and adequate;
Make arrangements for testing outside the laboratory for United Nations staff upon request;
Keep records of all work done in the laboratory and provide a statistical report on laboratory activities.
To be available on call during and outside office hours for examination and treatment of emergencies at the United Nations clinic or at patients’ homes;
Equipment maintenance;
Performing all tasks related to the smooth running of the service.
Expected results:
The results of laboratory analyses have maximum accuracy and high reliability.
The analyses are performed accurately, safely, cost-effectively, and on time, and the results are fully documented.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OF THE SELECTED NPSA
Minimum education requirements
Hold a university degree (Bachelor’s/Bac+3) in laboratory technology or a Master’s degree
Min. years of relevant work experience
Have at least six (6) years (with a bachelor’s degree) or 3 years (with a master’s degree) of relevant professional experience in a public or private structure at the national or international level in the field of the laboratory;
Proven supervisory experience in a biomedical analysis laboratory in public hospitals or private clinics is desirable.
Required skills
Proven experience in the operation of a medical analysis laboratory during an epidemic (example: Covid-19, etc.) would be an asset;
Prior work experience within the United Nations system is highly desirable;
Prior experience in the field of humanitarian crises and infectious diseases is highly desirable; Experience in using computers and office software (MS Word, Excel, etc. and internet management systems);
